Taking care of your braces is important to achieving your dream smile! At Imagine Orthodontic Studio, we’re here with essential tips to keep your braces in top shape. When you have traditional metal braces or any orthodontic treatment like Invisalign, Angel Aligners, or Byte it is important to clean them for a smooth and successful treatment. Unlike cleaning your clear aligners, braces cleaning care is a little different.

Brushing your teeth is more important than ever when you have braces. You can prevent issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and damage to your braces with a few simple practices and some dedication. Keep your smile healthy and your braces in the best shape with a dedicated daily brushing routine. Here is a great example of a daily brushing routine when you have braces :

Choose the Right Toothbrush: When you are brushing your teeth with braces it is best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a specially designed orthodontic toothbrush. Another effective toothbrush you can use is an electric toothbrush but make sure to attach orthodontic brush heads.

  1. Brush After Every Meal Try to brush your teeth after every meal to remove any food particles and plaque that build up. When brushing your teeth after a meal isn’t possible then make sure to rinse your mouth out with water to dislodge any food particles
  2. Use Fluoride Toothpaste Fluoride toothpaste helps protect against cavities. To avoid damaging your braces make sure to be gentle on the wires and brackets.
  3. Brush at an Angle Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and then brush along the gum line, around the brackets, and make sure to brush the surface area of where you chew!

After you are done brushing for your braces, the next step in your daily orthodontic care routine should be flossing. This can be more challenging when you have braces, but it is the best way to remove any food particles that brushing might have missed. Here is the best way to floss effectively:

  • Use Orthodontic Floss Orthodontic floss can help you steer around the wires and brackets. Another option for flossing is water flossers, which are designed for cleaning between braces.
  • Be Gentle Gently insert the floss between your teeth and slide it up and down along the sides of each tooth. Avoid snapping the floss to prevent damage to your braces.

The last step of your daily brushing routine should be to rinse your mouth with water or an antiseptic mouthwash. This step can help stop bacteria from growing and freshen your breath. If you want a mouthwash that will strengthen your teeth and provide additional protection against cavities then look for fluoride-based mouthwashes.
